Hawaii lawmakers are advancing House Bill 325, a measure that would prevent workplace discrimination against medical marijuana patients. The legislation, which was unanimously approved by the House Labor Committee, bars employers from making hiring or firing decisions based on an individual’s status as a registered medical cannabis patient or a positive drug test, as long as the employee is not impaired at work. However, exemptions exist for safety-sensitive jobs and employers with federal obligations. This bill could provide job security for Hawaii’s medical cannabis patients while prompting businesses to reevaluate workplace policies.
